I’m a big morning coffee drinker. I use 2 tsp of International Delight coffee creamer and a tbsp of whipped cream. Do I have to ditch this?

Can I do more than one challenge at a time?
6yr
  • DietID_TeamDietitians Hi @Ellen89 - you can only do one challenge at a time. We designed it this way because studies show you'll be more successful at building a good habit if you focus on one thing, vs. trying to...
  • Ellen89 That helps. Thnx!
  • zsanagustin I just started this challenge yesterday. So far, so good. I just feel my tummy is so heavy! Is this the normal effect?
Is Simply Lite Low Carb Dark Chocolate Sugar-Free 50% Cacao okay for this challenge? Is it healthy or best to just skip it?
6yr
  • DietID_TeamDietitians I would suggest skipping it because one of its main ingredients is Maltitol, a sugar alcohol or sweetener. Though it is not as sweet as sugar, it’s still an artificial sweetener, which you should...
  • AlexB Okay cool! Thank you. I just usually have one square of super dark chocolate.
  • annefood It's best to just skip it. Sugar alternatives tend to cause gastrointestinal issues when eaten in excess. I eat 100% cacao chips with dried fruit for a little dessert sometimes. No added sugar or...

Any thoughts on stevia or alternatives if the need arises?
6yr
  • annefood Great question @ingalls ! Pure stevia extract is the only "sweetener" that is allowed during the Avoid Added Sugar Challenge. Make sure that it is only stevia leaf though, as stevia products (such...
  • ingalls Thanks for the stevia info! Outside of that, avoid all the other artificial alternatives you'd find in typical "diet" and "zero calorie" stuff?
  • annefood You’re welcome! Yes exactly, avoid all artificial alternatives.

How do marinades weigh in regards to eating sugar? ie: a marinade for meat that uses Dijon mustard before cooking.
6yr
  • DietID_TeamDietitians So there are marinades that have added sugar and those that don’t. Dijon mustard is oftentimes made with honey (which is added sugar) so you can try the same recipe with ground mustard instead. You...
  • ingalls Thanks! Part of the question stemmed from picking up pre-made stuff. I noticed some things are awesome - like salad dressing listed ingredients. But marinades might just say “Dijon mustard” with no...
  • DietID_TeamDietitians Yes!! this is a hard one. Once the new nutrition labels hit the market, they will list out the actual grams of added sugar vs naturally occuring sugar. That should make all the difference. Great...
What challenge should I start next?🤨

Bread 🥖

I normally eat ezekiel bread and noticed one of the main ingredients is honey. Are there any breads without added sugar?
  • DietID_TeamDietitians Great question @AlexB! The Ezekiel low sodium and sesame sprouted breads have 0g added sugar. They have some malted barley, but it must be very little if it didn't register on the nutrition count....
  • AlexB Oh great! Thank you! I go to the RO market a lot so that’s perfect.
  • teachwitme Wow. Buy me some

Composting

Can I compost olive pits, pistachio nut shells, and corn cobs after they’ve been boiled?
  • DietID_TeamDietitians The short answer is yes. But all 3 take longer to compost so for the shells and pits, just know that they will take longer to break down so you may need to filter them out if you’re composting at...
  • mmorawski For the cobs, even after they’re boiled or steamed? I’ve heard that once vegetables are cooked, you shouldn’t compost them. Just wondering…
  • annefood @mmorawski it’s fine to compost cooked veggies as long as they’re only steamed or boiled- so no fat or sauces.

Does anyone snack on squash and sweet potatoes? What’s a good way to prepare those for snacking or meals on the go?

  • annefood Hey @ScountMQ ! Great question about two delicious foods! Squash: my favorite way is to peel and deseed it, cut it into small cubes, and spread it on a baking sheet. Toss it with olive oil, sea...
