Put a bunch of Germans in the kitchen, and you get carb loading at its finest. Sauerbraten, red cabbage and potato dumplings (knodel) are all really just a way to get gravy.

And interesting - that's how my mum made Sheperd's Pie when we were growing up in Malaysia. I wonder where that little smarty-pants learned to make Shepherd's Pie that way?
