Until I shopped farmers markets I had no idea how many varieties of food are available. I grew up in a rural "food desert" where if we didn't grow it ourselves, the only supermarket was Walmart. I just bought 8 (8!) different varieties of beets to plant in my garden. Who knew there were white beets? Not me!

Wow! 8 kinds of beets?! Yea I find the normal grocery stores just have the basics. I find a lot more interesting vegetables at the ethnic grocery stores. I doubt they are locally grown, but at least it forces me to try something new.

I love purple potatoes - especially the ones that look normal on the outside.

@mirasingh right!? It's the best surprise. @munchiemummy I love that story. And 8 different varieties of beets sounds amazing. Please share when you harvest, can't wait to see!

The vertical farm trend really bothers me. I can't put my finger on exactly why but it feels like the wrong shade of "green."

Totally agree @etsummer I'm not an anti-innovation person so I'm happy to see progress that unlocks supply of fresh food in communities that need it most. But we need lots of aerofarms to tip the...
