Haha I'm guilty of the same. And I never seem to learn that I should bring a cup of water to my small houseplants instead of putting them right under the kitchen sink faucet...I've had way too many soil overflows

wow! this tip is so useful! i have always wondered how my plants could take care of themselves while I'm out on a trip. could the ice cubes harm the plants due to the water temperature?

@KaduNakashima that's a good question! I did a little digging (pun intended) and it looks like it's fine--since ice melts slowly, the water turns to room temperature by the time it hits the roots. Watering plants with ice-cold water can shock the plant, so avoid that! It's also important to figure out how much ice it takes to fully water the plant, it can be easy to under-water with this method.
