I'm not a researcher or an urban farmer, but I have had a garden before and was able to grow a lot. That doesn't mean it's 'enough' but some is better than none. We also have a ton of underutilized space in urban environments, e.g. rooftops. Now I have never grown anything on a rooftop, but others have, and they seem to be successful.

The biggest challenge is in making the production make economic sense - it's great to produce and to be able to have greater control over your own food, but it can't really be sustained if you're losing money at it.
