this is such an important discussion, because a lot of 'small businesses' in America are actually franchises - where the independent business owner absorbs all risk. As someone who grew up in a small business household, I can understand where these franchises are coming from - owners are barely making ends meet. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I know the person running 1-2 subways is not taking home big bonuses like the Subway executives.
