Riki 9yr Sounds like a cool amazing concept. I need to read more to understand it better, but assuming it can work cost effectively it sounds exciting. Now need to explore some more about Seaweed too :)

JohnnyBowman 9yr Thanks for bringing this article to my attention @udi. I was talking to a deep water aquaculture engineer from Lockheed Martin last week (they have a large aquaculture R&D department). I didn't see this mentioned in the article, but from their perspective the #1 hurdle to implementing designs like the one mentioned here is permitting. The only place you can get a sizable permit to do this work from the US is the Gulf of Mexico. In other aquaculture hubs like Hawaii, environmental regulations make this kind of work very difficult. The industry is hoping to create standards like those for organic in the food industry to appease environmentalists, but there's a lot of inertia (and money) preventing that given the size of current aquaculture sales. As a result, a lot of the cutting edge designs which promote sustainable aquaculture are getting built abroad in Asia and the Middle East. I don't think the US has a single large deep water aquaculture facility but I could be wrong. From my perspective, I think we're losing out an huge opportunity given the $160 billion aquaculture and the fact that we import almost all fish from farms abroad. We also lose out on setting environmental standards for best fish farming practices.
