Sobeys Is Selling Avocado Halves, The Internet Is Confused
A Canadian grocery store selling packaged avocado halves is causing a stir on the web... 🤔🙈 I'm struggling to picture a scenario where these would be a necessity...

Hmmm now this doesn't make much sense...

Like the peeled oranges at whole foods!!The rationale for the Oranges was to solve for accessibility issues - people who are handicapped can't easily peel oranges, and presumably can't cut and deseed an avocado.

But unlike with the oranges, this packaging looks difficult! If I had limited mobility with my hands I'm not sure this packaging option would help.

I think not everyone knows how to get the pit out without getting their hands super messy and destroying the avocado. I've seen some weird attempts, so I can see why someone would pick this up. Maybe on the back of the package they should show people the knife trick to get the pit out so they can just sue fresh Avos next time

I like this idea. Many times I only use half of an avocado and can never keep the other half from turning brown

@CrystalKirscht rather than refrigerating, if you slice it in half and leave it out at room temperature, it will develop a very thin dry layer on top that will prevent it from browning on the inside. #kitchentip

@mirasingh I thought the same -- maybe that's the reason? That's the only thing that came to mind. But I think by now most people know to google these things. There's a video for everything out there. This would just encourage people to take the shortcut at the expense of the environment.

@rachna I know, I thought of the oranges too. The thing is I can see someone wanting that orange peeled as a quick snack on the go. Ok. But o don't recall ever seeing anyone snacking on an avocado half on the go 😄 that would seem quite a mess tbh.

@rachna and about the handicap issue. Looking at this packaging, unlike with the orange where you'd just pop a lid open, this looks pretty heftily packed. I don't know that it saves much effort as compared to slicing one in half...

@gwendolyn yes, that's exactly what I though and expressed in my comment above. It doesn't seem like a big time saver... Reminds me of a complicated egg cracking device someone once gifted my husband 🙊

Feel compelled to say #FOODWASTE in all caps. But have to say, I was in the elevator the other day and a father was telling a story to the person next to me and said that he turned away from his 3-year old daughter for a quick second, and she had grabbed an avocado, bit through its skin and was seconds later, covered in avocado goo after rabidly consuming it. Maybe we should all be a little less scared of getting ourselves dirty when eating fruits. :)

@mirasingh I gashed my palm really bad doing the knife trick! So decades later, I still can't use a knife. I have to resort to a spoon.

Well, being a Canadian with a Sobey's down the road, I don't know whether to hang my head in shame, or tip my hat!?
