Georegulus 8yr Ive heard this but never had a problem myself when sprouting grains or beans. Does anyone know whether "microgreens" have the same problem?

unconventionalbaker 8yr Hmmm. A toughie. I suppose if there's a high risk of catching something it's worth the label. Then again I take mainstream reports like this with a grain of salt. I find there are often other agendas involved, such as for example promoting the view that organic or healthy = possibly dangerous, etc. I feel like I'd need to do some independent research on something like this to make an informed opinion...

olivettefarm 8yr @Georegulus microgreens are grown differently than sprouts. They're grown in open air in soilless mixes inside of greenhouses as opposed to sprouts that are grown in a manner that can be pretty conducive to bacteria (low air flow, high humidity/moisture) if your growing methods are not completely sanitized. Micros tend to have a low risk of contamination. This isn't to say that sprouts are bad, just much more difficult to grow safely in relation to other veggies.

JenniferDoscher 8yr I agree, thanks for explaining @olivettefarm . I just learned the other day that my local go-to-healthy-food-store no longer carries sprouts or micros for this reason. I was shocked, really. I hope growing practices can be adjusted; I'd like to see the option to return to stores. I appreciate the convenience.
