DietID_TeamDietitians 7yr How does it feel? What are you replacing meat with? My favorite meat replacements are mushrooms and jackfruit.

shezza 7yr I never tried jackfruit, I’m using soya mince for spaghetti Bol, chilli etc, quorn bacon rashers, bio life cheese(which I hate, looking for another option) soya milk.

annefood 7yr Hey @shezza ! Congrats for jumping into the Eat Less Meat Challenge! We designed this Challenge to call attention to how much meat we consume, and to help people make room in their diets for other nutritious foods like fruits and veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats. But some meat and animal products (in moderation) can play a nutritious role in one's diet. Instead of using processed soy and corn meat replacements, try incorporating other protein-rich foods into your diet such as nuts, beans, plain yogurt and wild fish. And when you do want meat, go for the real deal! Try to choose sustainably-raised, local, organic varieties, and avoid highly processed meats such as hot dogs and sausage that have been associated with increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Portion control is key too—think of meat as an accessory on your plate, instead of the star of the show. Same goes for the cheese—no reason at all to eat a fake cheese that you hate. Simply use real cheese in moderation! Firm cheeses like pecorino, parmesan, and cheddar keep well in the fridge, and make for a great protein-rich snack when combined with fruits or veggies. As for milk, I do drink unsweetened organic almond milk (soy is great too) since that plays a larger role in my diet (smoothies, in coffee, on oatmeal etc.).

annefood 7yr Also, @Rachna mentioned jackfruit and mushrooms—these two are great meat replacements because they are plants and are completely unprocessed. A "meaty" portobello burger or sandwich can satisfy that meaty, savory craving. And I just had "pulled pork" made with jackfruit and was completely blown away. It was delicious!

shezza 7yr I’ve never had jackfruit

annefood 7yr @shezza I hadn't either until just recently. It can be found in a can in markets if fresh isn't available. Googling "jackfruit pulled pork" results in many great looking recipes! Let me know if you have any questions 😊
